I don’t just write copy for a living, I also teach it. Ten years ago, I set out to become the best copywriter in the world. I don’t mean the best in terms of talent—I mean in terms of experience, reliability, versatility, passion and influence. The latter is the most important to me because I don’t know many other copywriters willing to devote their free time to teaching, which in most cases is more like glorified community service. I always say, you’re an expert at your craft when you begin teaching it.
I was elated when the owner of San Francisco School of Copywriting asked me if I’d like to create a course and teach it. He knew I had four years of experience teaching at Miami Ad School and also fancied myself a pro copywriter. Based on a shift I was noticing in the industry at the time, I created a class that would empower confidence and versatility through a better understanding of how to properly write for as single brand across every relevant marketing channel. Here are the two-hour classes: Intro to Copywriting, Websites, Emails, Product Copy, and Social Media.

I hosted my first copywriting workshop at LinkedIn in 2014 to a global team of 100 marketers during their annual offsite. I’ve trained many a team since then. I applaud the managers and directors who see the value of upskilling their teams to be stronger copywriters. After all, a brand’s voice is the most important aspect of its UX. From blog posts and newsletters to customer acquisition emails and social posts, employees are writing and publishing on behalf of their company, in one way or another, all day long. Unfortunately, most are not following—or even aware of—their brand’s voice and tone guidelines.
